PAWS Volunteer Applicant Orientation and A Few Updates About This Blog

Posted by siyerwin on Monday, February 01, 2010 at 1:31 PM

There will be an orientation for new PAWS volunteer applicants on February 6, 10:00 AM, at the PAWS Animal Rehabilitation Center (PARC). See map at the PAWS Website, or, if you need a somewhat more detailed instructions on how to get to the shelter, go to one of my previous posts on how to find the animal shelter.

After the orientation, there will be a seminar on humane dog catching that will be held on the same venue (3:00 PM). Local barangay officials are especially invited for this so kindly extend this invitation to your barangay officers. This humane education seminar is free and is an integral part of animal welfare groups' advocacy for the humane treatment of all animals.

A Few Updates about MeFindHome.org

This blog is still alive and kicking and although I've been out of the loop as of late, my heart is still with the animals and, pending resolution of my time management issues (hard to explain but let's just say that I now almost have two full-time jobs, among other things), I wish to resume active volunteering/blogging duties some time in the future.

I apologize to the comments here that are left unanswered. I also made a huge blunder of accidentally deleting about 5 legitimate comments so I also apologize to those who left those comments. It will be great if you guys re-post those comments as there was one there from a fellow animal lover who made a short note about his/her own animal rescue efforts. I have been doing this for years and have never made that mistake before. Other comments tend to be repeats of previous questions that I have already answered so I am working on some sort of FAQ section so please stay tuned. Those posting something about selling pets will not see the light of day on these pages (I've been working on a post about this for ages, hehe). If you wish to give away or abandon your pets, please send an email to me directly because I would like to try and change your mind. There are kinder options that you can take.

As usual, if you wish to receive quicker replies, I suggest emailing me through sherwin @ mefindhome . org

Also, you might see some weird changes in the appearance of this blog because of some changes in Google's (this blog is hosted by Google's Blogger.com) services. I am thinking of moving the hosting somewhere but that will also entail a significant amount of time but that may be the direction this blog is going to.

Finally, thank you to those who send in their donations through this blog. Not being able to thank you personally is something I regret all the time but please know that whatever you give do help the cause and the animals that continue to bear the brunt of human cruelty and neglect. PAWS or any other animal welfare organization can't do it alone after all.

Thank you very much and see you all at the shelter! :)

PAWS Orientation for Volunteer Applicants - Aug. 22, 2009

Posted by siyerwin on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at 4:29 PM

For advocates who have been waiting, here's your chance to learn more what you can do to help out in the Philippine animal welfare cause. Attend the volunteer applicant orientation on Saturday, August 22, 2009 from 10 AM to 1 PM. Venue will be at the PAWS Animal Rehabilitation Center in Quezon City (Map Here)

For those who have not mailed in their PAWS volunteer application form, kindly download it, fill it up and hand-carry it to the venue.

This will be a good chance for you to meet the cats and dogs up for adoption at the PAWS shelter. We have over 200 rescue cats and dogs currently at the shelter and it is not easy to find homes for them. We need more people to help spread the word and educate people that pets are a lifetime commitment, not a passing fancy or something that you discard when things go a little rough.

Unfortunately, I've been receiving a number of correspondences from people that view animal shelters as places where they can abandon their pets. You may see such requests in the comments section of this blog. If you see some of them and can count them, you multiply that number by 5 and you can see how much email and comments I get (I don't publish all of them) from people trying to get rid of their pets. Multiply that by another 5 and you could probably have a rough estimate of how much PAWS is getting.

I will be making a rant/post about this in upcoming days/week.

CARA Cat Adoption Event - Aug. 22, 2009

Compassion and Responsibility for Animals (CARA) will be putting up a cat adoption booth at the Bonifacio High Street, The Fort, in front Coffee Bean Cafe from 4 to 9 PM. For those who are interested in adopting homeless animals and are near (or even far) the area, you may want to check out that event. Hope you bring home a kitty or two.

Help the Animals! Volunteer!

Attend the PAWS Volunteer Orientation!

Day: Saturday
Date: May 2, 2009
Time: 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Place: PAWS Animal Rehabilitation Center (PARC)

For all of you who are thinking about volunteering, now is the time to act. Help PAWS help the animals by stepping forward and getting involved in the animal welfare cause here in the Philippines.

PAWS will be having an applicant volunteers orientation on May 2, 2009, Saturday at the PAWS Animal Rehabilitation Center, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Print out the PAWS volunteers application form and submit it personally to the shelter on or before the orientation date.

What can you do as a PAWS volunteer?

There are a ton of work to be done and you will need to be prepared to sweat it out. Working for the animals is no glamorous job but if you are cut out for it, these will be some of your reward:

rescue cat shaun and Mary Ann Rescue cat Shaun and adopted human Mary Ann are all smiles (I know cats. That's a smile) because they found each other. Shaun was rescued by PAWS in the middle of EDSA, the busiest street in the Philippines, on the brink of dehydration and death. Now he's safely home with loving humans to boot! No more highways for this cat. (Read Shaun's cat rescue story)

adopted dog Jasmine home at the farmJasmine, a former shelter dog, likewise, is all smiles in his new home with Marla Nicandro, who's also an active PAWS volunteer. Yes, as a PAWS volunteer you have the option of rewarding yourself by taking home a rescue dog or cat (or both)! Isn't that neat? (Read Jasmine-related posts: Her cat adoption story and adoption update.

PAWS Dr. Dog, UP PGHHumans helping animals, animals helping humans... Yes, animals volunteer to help us, too. Love, after all, is still a two-way street. Volunteer for PAWS' animal-assisted therapy or Dr. Dog program and see the sweetest smiles from both the children (program recipients) and animals.

Interested yet? (I have more photos to share! I will just continue add them in the coming days)

To get more ideas about the specific things that you can do for the animals, please check out my post about what you can do as a PAWS volunteer.

To be honest, the shelter's most urgent need right now are volunteers willing to handle administrative/clerical/housekeeping work at the PAWS shelter office. The shelter is currently running on a skeletal (that means 2 to 3) all-volunteer daily work force and most of the time is spent taking care of the approximately 200 shelter animals and so the paper work tends to pile up. Sign up for this job and you get extra hugs from the shelter cats and dogs (and even fellow volunteers)!!! :)

Below is the official invitation from PAWS. Thanks for your time and hope to see you at the shelter!!! :)

Dear all,

Please be informed that the Orientation for PAWS Volunteer Applicants will be on Saturday, May 2, 2009, 10 am to 1pm at the PAWS Shelter in Aurora Boulevard, Katipunan Valley, Loyola Heights, QC (see map at http://parc.mefindhome.org)

Applicants for volunteers must be willing to share at least 8 hours per month of their time doing work for the animals ( i.e. shelter work, manning PAWS booths, dog training/socializat ion, visiting schools or hospitals; or work from home creating PAWS flyers, posters, adoption write-ups, writing campaign letters or doing clerical work for the PAWS office, etc)

Please note that those who have been unable to attend Volunteer Orientation for the second or third time, despite having been informed ahead of the orientation dates, will already have to re-submit their application forms.

Accomplished volunteer application forms (forms available at www.paws.org.ph) have to be handcarried to PARC during office hours or sent by snail mail to: 87 Small Horseshoe Drive, New Manila, QC 1112 ahead of the Orientation Date. No faxed or emailed forms please.

Thank you for wanting to share your time and effort for the animals! See you on May 2!

Greetings, animal advocates! I'm finally back from another blogging break and I'd like to start off by wishing you guys a very Happy New Year! Hope you had a rockin' holiday season with all your fur babies and thanks to all those who remembered the shelter animals last Christmas. Your gifts of kindness are magical.

PAWS is 100% made of volunteer stuff and it needs more!

Are you photography enthusiast who likes taking pictures of animals? Come join in as well!

Just print out the application form, fill it up and bring it with you to the orientation. Please do not send it by fax anymore (we're trying to save on office supplies). Also bring Php 200 for the ID and other orientation materials.

For further inquiries about the orientation, please email philpaws @ yahoo.com or post a comment here and I will try to reply asap.

Volunteer Orientation on March 1... and other shelter news!

Posted by siyerwin on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at 9:12 PM

Your voice is their voice.

There will be a volunteer orientation on March 1, 2008, Saturday, 10:00 AM, at the PAWS Animal Rehabilitation Center (PARC).

What can you do as a volunteer? There are a bunch of them.

You can either do animal shelter work, help in fund-raising events to help pay the bills, help raise the spirits of hospital patients with our Dr. Dogs, visit schools to teach children kindness, or adopt!

Here's a little secret: I decided on volunteering for the selfish reason of just wanting to be near animals. I was kind of deprived of that privilege when I was growing up because folks at home aren't too crazy about them.

Now, two years after I attended my orientation, I have a companion cat that actually sleeps on my bed! She's a little hyperactive but she has managed to grow on everyone that even my 78 year old grandfather can't resist playing with her almost everyday...

See you at the shelter in 1 month!

Adoption Update:

There have been 5 adoptions at the shelter so far this year (as of January 26, 2008):

4 cats, namely, Goldie, Garfield, Ngay and an unnamed kitten are homeless no more!

1 dog named New York has also been adopted.

Celine has already been adopted even before I posted about her on this blog! Celine found home last December!
Jaya, the shelter dog
Jaya, a dog that used to be included in the sidebar adoption gallery, passed away due to sickness. Rest easy, little friend.
