"Cats on Highways"

Posted by siyerwin on Monday, August 11, 2008 at 11:30 PM

Cats were not made for the city streets. They are no match against man's inventions of stone and cold steel and are helpless against cruelty and indifference. The story of Shaun and Joey, two cats that somehow ended up in the middle of two of the busiest streets in the Philippines, is a testament to this severely lopsided contest.

Anna Cabrera of PAWS shares their story:

When cats and kittens end up in the most dangerous of places, on a narrow ledge near the fast lane of a busy highway like EDSA... Or in the middle of an "island" of Aurora Boulevard, you can bet that they did not fall out of the sky.

They have been put there by cruel or demented individuals.

Take for example the case of a cat we named "Shaun".

He was found huddled by the side of the EDSA Shaw Tunnel. Concerned motorists Sue Hooper and Wendy Duncan reported the case of the cat - immobilized from possibly a combination of fear and dehydration - on Saturday, July 27, 2008.

The cat had been seen at the same spot since last Thursday and a PAWS rescue was finally arranged on Sunday night.

Can you see Shaun in this picture?

Grimy and severely dehydrated, Shaun still managed to meow his thanks the minute he was brought into the car. He also tried to show appreciation by rubbing up against his rescuer's shirt as he was being rushed to the vet clinic.

Shaun was brought to Vets in Practice clinic where he wolfed down a plateful of soft cat food laid out for him, before he was put on dextrose by Doc Herbert.

Shawn at Vets in PracticePAWS Cat RescueThe spunky Shaun is expected to make a full (physical) recovery from his harrowing experience by next week.

Just like this other white and orange tabby kitten we plucked off the plant box ("Island") in the middle of Aurora Boulevard last June 25.

Cat Joey rescued from Aurora Blvd."Joey" was entangled amidst the bougainvilla branches planted on the said "island". PAWS had to cut the tight wire which someone had put around his neck as a 'decorative collar'.

Now, these "Highway Cats" are up for adoption.

If you are ready to offer them a safe and loving home, please contact us at philpaws@yahoo. com.

Report incidences of cat cruelty to the police "117". For assistance, call PAWS at 475-1688 or email a complete report (i.e. time, place, name of perpetrator, photos)

Thank you.

Kathy Moran, a cat rescuer herself, wrote about this story in her Philippine Star Column. Read here.

some heartless human must've left poor shaun in that tunnel. haay. mga tao nga naman. eto lang masasabi ko sa lahat ng masugid na nagbabasa ng blog ni siyerwin: keep your eyes and your hearts open. maraming mga pusang katulad nila shaun at joey ang nandyan lang sa tabi-tabi, pati na rin mga aso. takot, walang masilungan, walang nagmamahal. in the first place, kaya nga tayo nilikha ng panginoon para maging tagapangalaga ng mga nilikha nya.

wag na natin dagdagan ang mga aso at pusa sa shelter. just take a look around you, while you are walking on a busy street in the city or even in your own neighborhood. there are a lot of cats and dogs like shaun and joey out there just waiting for you to love them and give them a forever home. give them a chance and you'll get nothing but unconditional love and companionship from these wonderful furry critters.

**sorry siyerwin, wala pa ako blog eh. ;)

spam, if you can't rescue the dog yourself, please give PAWS a call at 4751688 ASAP. In the mean time, pakibigyan mo ng tubig at pagkain yung aso.

patulong naman may aso akong nakikita every morning sa labas ng condo unit namin nakakaawa sinisipa lang ng mga guard d2 pa rescue namn po sa tuscany, ayala makati city

  8. By siyerwin on Aug 27, 2008, 10:56:00 PM

Gorgeous, have you confronted the guards about it? Please do so and tell them that they're committing a crime by doing that. If they persist, please call 117 and tell the police about it.

If you need help in what to do and what to tell the guards, kindly call up 475-1688 or email philpaws@yahoo.com. Please be prepared to provide more info like your exact location and the name of the guards. A video of the crime in progress will be of great value in pursuing a legal case against these abusive humans if needed. Most of the time though, it won't need to come to that but a firm reprimand should bring them to their senses.

Thanks and do keep us updated.

  11. By Kristine on Oct 14, 2009, 10:34:00 AM

:) Just make sure to take care of him or her, and you'd have great memories together!

Please do not leave your email or contact numbers in the comments. Email me directly at sherwin @ mefindhome.org if you have concerns or questions. This blog is increasingly attracting breeders/pet sellers trying to advertise their business through the comments and I don't want that. The blog seems to also be becoming a bulletin board of sorts for people who wish to abandon their pets. Blogger.com allows no way to edit your comments so there I have no other option but to delete comments that I deem inappropriate in this regard. I apologize for the inconvenience. Again, if you have any questions/concerns, better to email me at sherwin @ mefindhome.org than to comment here. Thank you very much!
