PhilippineShotgun.com Hacked and Defaced

Posted by siyerwin on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at 6:02 PM

I found something interesting this afternoon. Some angry bird-lover may have taken the vengeful path by defacing the website www.PhilippineShotgun.com. I was trying to access the site to learn more about it but found only this:

PhilippineShotgun.com defaced by bird-lover hacker who may be reacting to Philippine Ducks massacred by Philippine Shooting Team
It was from this website where photos of some members of the Philippine Shooting Team (namely Tet Lara, Jade De Guzman and Mike De Guzman), showing off their catch of wild birds, were grabbed and shared by alert animal welfare or wildlife conservation advocates. The abusive and insensitive manner by which they showed off their haul has caused such an uproar that they were forced to put out a most absurd written denial (via email)--- claiming that they stumbled into the birds already dead and that they were really promoting clay shooting!

What they did is made worse by the fact that the wild birds in question are of the species known as the Philippine Duck (Anas luzonica) which incidentally is a threatened species classified as "Vulnerable", a status preceding "Endangered".

Did a vigilante hacker sympathetic to the poor victims of this controversy, the dwindling population of Philippine wildlife, attack PhilippineShotgun.com as a form of reprisal?

Read more about this in my previous post.

the birdman striketh! if we consider how many thousands, perhaps millions, of bird lovers are out there, we'd never know who struck in honor of our hunted friends...and this flap about the hunting party is circulating the www like a huge surf.

heehee. i actually got a little thrill seeing the page :P

although it won't affect naman the case? like there wasn't any evidence there or something?

Yes, liza, I'm also kind of suspicious ... especially now that, more than 24 hours after I saw it like that, the webmaster still hasn't restored the site. One request to their host company and the site would have been restored. I'm sure they have daily back ups.

It's that or the webmaster simply has jumped ship. what with all the flak they're getting.

At any rate, the pictures should be enough evidence for "some" wrong doing. Let's just hope the three morons don't leave town.

Yes, it could be an inside job but in that case I would think they would put up something malicious to smear the good intentions of bird lovers. Anyway, Jade de Guzman also rewrote her wikipedia entry. She changed her alma mater from Bentley College (USA) to Harvard University and increased her net worth to $1.9 billion. As if, such alterations will somehow lift her above the $#1^ she's created.

Talking about IT security, they're a total failure.

For such an organization's website to be hacked is not only a disaster. It's a reflection of who they really are. They simply get what they deserve.

Should I call that humane? They're not human.

What goes around, comes around. Or is that What comes around, goes around? :) Let's hope these individuals find their conscience and realize that sooner or later, they'll reap what they sow. They've probably done these kind things before and now it's starting to bite them in the ass.

On the other hand, with the money power these people have, they're probably already out of the country while waiting for things to cool down. Palau sounds good?

hi just a correction the petition was initiated because of my stumbling into the BARHC (Bacolod Air Rifle Hunting Club) last December not because of the Philippine Shotgun team.I simply picked up on the cause because it was pertinent to my existing petition. In any case great blog!thanks for signing the petition and more power to you!

Please do not leave your email or contact numbers in the comments. Email me directly at sherwin @ mefindhome.org if you have concerns or questions. This blog is increasingly attracting breeders/pet sellers trying to advertise their business through the comments and I don't want that. The blog seems to also be becoming a bulletin board of sorts for people who wish to abandon their pets. Blogger.com allows no way to edit your comments so there I have no other option but to delete comments that I deem inappropriate in this regard. I apologize for the inconvenience. Again, if you have any questions/concerns, better to email me at sherwin @ mefindhome.org than to comment here. Thank you very much!
