I was utterly amazed when Burnz came to PARC to see Jeff, the office cat, for the first time. I had received an email from him expressing his interest in our PARC celebrity cat. He had found out about Jeff through a friend who, mayhap, found out about Jeff through someone else or through the blog. He had just lost his cat, whom he adored dearly (he even described her in detail and told me I should have met her before she ran away with her stray cat boyfriend), a few months prior. Jeff's temperament piqued his curiosity and he asked a few more details about him, which I promptly gave. After that I didn't hear from him again. Until about three saturdays ago when he came knocking on PARC's doors asking about Jeff!


Jeff, as expected, did his thing when Burnz called on him for the first time. He acted as if he had known Burnz for years but had simply lost touch and now just picked up where they had left off. Burnz signed the adoption form in posthaste, like he was signing the legal papers to a gargantuan trust fund, while Jeff "claimed" him as his newest human companion and confidant with his chatty meows and customary body rub.

Burnz, however, had to leave Jeff behind that saturday as he was bound for a pre-planned destination where he can't bring a furry friend. He just wanted to meet Jeff. He promised to come back for him. Last saturday, in the middle of a deluge of rain and thunder, he made good his promise. Jeff went home.

Jeff, the office cat, leaving the PARC office, his refuge for many of his cat years. A guy, getting soaked in the middle of the heavy rain, carrying Jeff inside a blanket, walking away to take his precious find, homeward bound. That's some image right there that will stay in my head for quite some time.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to tell their friends about the homeless animals on this site. We have actually found a number of them who are willing take care of some of our precious finds. Imagine it--- we just sat in front of our computers and we were able to find people who are willing to take homeless animals in. We now have proof: blogging can save lives! :) Let's keep doing it! :)

uAdoption is only one aspect of the animal welfare advocacy. There are other ways that you can help these homeless animals. If you're interested in learning more about those ways, please attend the forthcoming PAWS orientation on July 1, Saturday, the year 2006, 10:00 AM, at the PAWS Animal Rehabilitation Center (PARC), and become a volunteer. Here's the chance you may be waiting for, my friend. Pounce on it. Now is the time. Stop denying your heart the fulfillment of seeing the animals freed from pain and misery and into better lives. Do it. Do it. :)

A hundred cat and dog licks await those who come. Bring a friend. Ask your friend to bring a friend.

These animals need more of us to lean on.

The idea that propels this blog is simply the idea (or hope) that there is a huge number of animal-lovers out there who sympathizes with the plight of homeless animals and that a percentage of those animal-lovers are in fact online and are reading blogs (or blogging themselves). I really could not find any number or statistics to support such a claim but if you are reading this blog right now, something tells me that you are one of those people and that you are curious as to how you may be able to help.

The best way you can help, as far as this blog is concerned, is to adopt. The second best way is to tell other people to do so; or, at the very least, let them know about the problem and urge them to do the same as you have. The concept is not rocket science and is not even unique. But I believe that it can work. Word of mouth or, in this case, word of blog, is indeed a very powerful thing!

Here's what I have in mind: If you have a personal website, like a blog, or something like it, you will be able to help by simply linking up. Yes it's that simple. Just adding a snippet of code into the template or source code of your website or blog increases the chances of somebody (who has the resources and compassion) stumbling into and changing the lives of these poor homeless animals. That, after all, is this blog's bottomline: to get the homeless animals home at last.

I am willing to link back if you so wish. I have created a section in the sidebar of this blog to do just that and using a neat little tool called blogrolling to help me simplify the process. I have added the initial group of animal-friendly blogs or sites that have linked Me.Find.Home, along with some that have caught my admiration and support. A Tale of Two Dogs

The Blind Dog



He almost ran out of luck and he appeared as if he knew and accepted that. He was blind but in his eyes was a glimmer of recognition for what he probably thought to be a forthcoming doom. I found him at PARC looking that way: resigned to his fate, with head bowed down, weak. He probably still didn't know, on account of his unseeing eyes, that he was already among friends and that he was at last safe; that he was no longer being sold to the dining table because a kind-hearted man already paid one hundred pesos for him and had brought him to PARC.

I arrived at PARC and saw him curled up on the floor being groomed by volunteers, who had christened him Joyce. He was giving out tiny cries of pain while the combs ran through his disheveled fur and lesioned skin. He licked at his wounds wondering perhaps at the attention he seemed to be getting. He had lived a long life of neglect and pain and his wounds and eyes were testament to that. He could no longer see but somehow his eyes, unseeing as they were, still could stare into one's heart and manage to pierce through.

Facts we know about Joyce:
1. Joyce is male.
2. Joyce is blind.
3. Joyce is having skin/fur problems (the vet hasn't checked on him yet as of this posting).
4. Joyce is weak and exhibits a general lack of enthusiasm, among other things, like nourishment and exercise. One week at PARC and I'm hoping that would change.
5. Joyce looks middle aged.
6. Joyce needs one more stroke of luck: a guardian, a friend who would love him despite his handicap.

He needs more attention than what the volunteers and overworked staff of PARC can give him, because of his condition. This dog needs an emergency adoption so to speak.

The Broken-Hearted Pup

They promised to come back for her and take her home but they never did. This weekend I arrived at PARC and was told that Nicole, the pup, was not around. She had been brought to the Marikina Veterinary Clinic and there she was (and is still) confined. Apparently, she has an enlarged heart. Nicole, the adorable pup, the poor thing, literally broke her heart waiting.

Nicole needs an adoptive home more than ever as the stressful conditions in the shelter would naturally be detrimental to her well-being. More images of her may be found here.

Facts we know about Nicole:

1. Nicole was born at the shelter and is around 3-4 months old.
2. Nicole has an enlarged heart.
3. Nicole needs a loving home to live out the rest of her life in.

Nicole needs more attention than what the volunteers and overworked staff of PARC can give him, because of her condition.

Adopting from PAWS

Thank you for your interest in adopting. By simply reading this website, you are already showing the animals of PAWS that you care. The animals of PAWS are internet savvy and are monitoring this website's traffic constantly. Tails are twitching and wagging with joy right at this moment.

If you really are serious about adopting a homeless animal from PAWS, here are what you need to do:

1. Download the PAWS Adoption Form and fill it up. Once filled up, you can fax it to (02)4751688. You can also bring the filled up form personally to the PAWS Animal Rehabilitation Center (PARC). A map of PARC's location can be found here. If you need more information on how to get there, just email me (sherwin [at] mefindhome.org) and I'll be glad to help. I live just a hundred steps from PARC and I may be able to give very very very good instructions.

2. Schedule an actual trip to PARC for the adoption interview by calling (02)4751688. This may coincide with step 1 and/or step 3. The interview will simply tell us how you are as an animal owner/guardian and what type of animal companion would fit you and your home.

3. Schedule an actual trip to PARC to meet an adoptable homeless animal. Choose the cat or the dog, kitten or puppy, that would complement you and your home. With a little patience and a lot of fun, I'm 100% sure you will find one!

4. Pay the adoption fee. That's Php300 for cats and Php1,000 for dogs. Before being adopted out, the animals of PAWS are neutered/spayed, vaccinated against rabies, groomed and dewormed, and provided with some sample pet food from Pedigree. After being adopted out, the animals may be brought back to the shelter to get free basic obedience training and avail of free veterinary consultations and discounts on PARC clinic services (all by appointment). The fee would simply go into ensuring that the adoption and animal rehabilitation programs of PAWS keep rolling like a happy puppy playing in the green pasture on a saturday afternoon!

5. Take your new companion home and go online to join the official PAWS yahoogroup and occasionally tell us what's up. We'd love to hear how you are doing with your new animal companion. Share pictures!

The Naming of Artemis

She was hand-carried into the PARC office, temporarily freed from the sad confines of her cage: a small, nervous and nameless white kitten permanently marked by the jet-black blob of fur at the base of her left ear and a jet-black-ink-dipped tail. She looked around the room with the walls painted green and the floor painted by a flurry of other furry things, some of them barking.

A couple of humans (called volunteers) congregated around her like the proverbial moth to the candle light. And she reacted to them the way any abandoned kitten unaccustomed to human company would react--- she deftly and instinctively turned cuter; a perfect mixture of fear and curiousity; with tail tucked between legs and eyes wide with wonder.

She didn't have much. She didn't even have a name. But in that fleeting moment of freedom from the cage, she got a taste of having. She had humans, whom she eventually realized are a bunch of cool playthings. She had a toy to play with aside from the humans. She had a huge bag of cat food, one that would not fit inside her cage, that she could claim as hers.

One of the humans even gave her her name; in a ceremony so brief it ended with the fading of the window light and the coming of the rain.

Small, still wide-eyed and perhaps heart-broken, she was hand-carried out of the PARC office back into her cage--- having nothing but her name.

Let's give Artemis more than her name. Call (02)4751688.

PARC

Unless otherwise stated, all the animals introduced on this blog are currently being housed and cared for at the PAWS Animal Rehabilitation Center (PARC). You can always visit them there from Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. Please take the time to visit PARC if you're really serious in adopting a homeless animal. Jeff, the office cat

The first time I met Jeff, the office cat, in the office of PARC (PAWS Animal Rehabilitation Center), he gracefully leapt from the floor and landed right on my lap and promptly rubbed his head into my neck and chin, meowing conversationally. It was a really pleasant first encounter because I could recall no other such first meetings with any other feline character before that time. He stayed on my lap until he decided it was time to look for new, unchartered laps, as there were a lot of them in the PARC office that day. It was the day of my PAWS orientation.

I knew from that first meeting that Jeff, the office cat, was something of a unique character. And later on, when I learned how he's referred to as Jeff, the office cat, I immediately understood why. He's the best office receptionist I have met thus far.

When we took pictures of him he would always walk towards me as I stepped back to set up the picture. He did so even when we had put a bowl of cat food in front of him. He would always stop eating and amble on towards me, often rubbing against my legs or my hands upon reaching me.

Hence, I don't think I will go astray when I say that Jeff, the office cat, is quite ready for adoption. He's been ready for adoption way before I met him. He needs people. He would stop eating cat food just to be near them. He needs a new home that would understand him and give him the company that he constantly seeks and would listen to his cat-speak. He has lots of stories to tell. Sit with him for five minutes and you'll know what I mean.
