The Naming of Artemis

Posted by siyerwin on Wednesday, June 07, 2006 at 9:12 PM

She was hand-carried into the PARC office, temporarily freed from the sad confines of her cage: a small, nervous and nameless white kitten permanently marked by the jet-black blob of fur at the base of her left ear and a jet-black-ink-dipped tail. She looked around the room with the walls painted green and the floor painted by a flurry of other furry things, some of them barking.

A couple of humans (called volunteers) congregated around her like the proverbial moth to the candle light. And she reacted to them the way any abandoned kitten unaccustomed to human company would react--- she deftly and instinctively turned cuter; a perfect mixture of fear and curiousity; with tail tucked between legs and eyes wide with wonder.

She didn't have much. She didn't even have a name. But in that fleeting moment of freedom from the cage, she got a taste of having. She had humans, whom she eventually realized are a bunch of cool playthings. She had a toy to play with aside from the humans. She had a huge bag of cat food, one that would not fit inside her cage, that she could claim as hers.

One of the humans even gave her her name; in a ceremony so brief it ended with the fading of the window light and the coming of the rain.

Small, still wide-eyed and perhaps heart-broken, she was hand-carried out of the PARC office back into her cage--- having nothing but her name.

Let's give Artemis more than her name. Call (02)4751688.

Here are another bunch of photos that you may show around to your friends:

An imploring look from Artemis the named.

A funny mixture of fear and curiosity! This look only a cat can pull off.

    Hi Sherwin,
I am so glad to know that a blogspot like yours exists. This site is tremendous! I love it! I would love to help, tell me how. I used to be part of the core group. Uni and work got in the way, sad to say. Do you still meet in Tita Nita's house? Please give my regards to her. Anyway, you may be interested to see the web tv segment I produced for FreshWave TV about my cat that I adopted at the shelter here in Australia, here is the link:

Please do not leave your email or contact numbers in the comments. Email me directly at sherwin @ mefindhome.org if you have concerns or questions. This blog is increasingly attracting breeders/pet sellers trying to advertise their business through the comments and I don't want that. The blog seems to also be becoming a bulletin board of sorts for people who wish to abandon their pets. Blogger.com allows no way to edit your comments so there I have no other option but to delete comments that I deem inappropriate in this regard. I apologize for the inconvenience. Again, if you have any questions/concerns, better to email me at sherwin @ mefindhome.org than to comment here. Thank you very much!
